The CW has announced April 10 as the premiere date for “Cedric’s Barber Battle,” a new reality competition series where the country’s best barbers will go heads up, while Cedric the Entertainer looks on as the ringmaster.
“The barbershop is one of these places where it’s more than just a place for getting your hair cut. That’s why I wanted to do this show,” said Ced, who actually removed his hat, by request, while promoting the series at the recent TCA Press Tour.
“Any good barbershop, you’ll know, it’s a man cave if you live in a studio apartment,” he continued. “It’s a place where if you don’t’ have the money for therapy, go to the barbershop and talk it out.”
The show is designed to mix the reality competition element with Ced’s unique brand of humor. A vet of the “Barbershop” films, Ced will visit shops in such cities as Los Angeles, Queens, Harlem and Austin, where barbers will battle each other by creating elaborate works of hair art – images of someone’s face, landscapes, celebrities images, etc. The only tools at their disposal will be clippers and some hair color.
Episodes will contain two challenges: a “buzz cut” challenge, set inside the featured barbershop, and an outdoor “cut down” challenge, located at a regional landmark in each city. At the end of each episode, a champion will be crowned.
The panel of judges, a.k.a. “The Cutting Board,” is made up of renowned celebrity barbers including Curtis Smith, Rich the Barber, Bashan “B.G. Cutta” Gibbs and famed instructor Lena Piccininni.
